Dental anxiety is more common than most people realise. For some patients, the sound of a drill or the memory of an unpleasant childhood visit is enough to delay treatment for years — often until a small problem has become a much larger one. Sedation dentistry changes that.
At Dr. Ruchi’s Multispeciality Dental Care in RS Puram, Coimbatore, we offer several levels of sedation so that anxious patients, patients with strong gag reflexes, and patients needing long or complex procedures can be treated safely and comfortably.
Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation is not just for people who are afraid of the dentist. It’s genuinely useful for:
- Adults with dental anxiety or phobia who have been avoiding treatment.
- Patients with a strong gag reflex that makes even routine cleaning difficult.
- Patients undergoing long procedures — multiple crowns, full-mouth restorations, complex extractions — where staying still and calm for extended periods is challenging.
- Patients with low pain tolerance or nerve-heavy dental work where extra comfort helps.
- Children who cannot tolerate treatment awake for restorative or surgical needs.
- Patients with special healthcare needs — physical, developmental, or medical conditions that make regular dental care difficult.
If you’re avoiding a visit because of anxiety, sedation is often the difference between a problem that grows and a problem that gets treated.
The Levels of Sedation We Offer
Local Anaesthesia (Standard)
Every restorative and surgical procedure uses local anaesthesia — this numbs the treated area so you don’t feel pain. Most patients handle routine treatment comfortably with local anaesthesia alone.
Oral Sedation (Mild to Moderate)
A prescribed tablet taken about an hour before the appointment produces a relaxed, drowsy state. You remain awake and able to respond, but the anxiety fades and time feels shorter. You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours after.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
A mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is breathed through a small nose mask. It produces a warm, calm feeling that wears off within minutes of stopping the flow. You can typically drive yourself home. Nitrous oxide is especially useful for anxious children and short-to-medium procedures.
IV Sedation (Moderate to Deep)
For patients who need deeper relaxation — long surgical procedures, high anxiety, or a combination of complex treatments in one sitting — IV sedation is administered by a qualified anaesthetist. You’ll remember little to nothing of the procedure. Full recovery takes several hours; you’ll need an adult companion for the day.
General Anaesthesia (via Partner Hospital)
For extensive treatment needs — for example, complex full-mouth work in very young children, patients with severe special needs, or specific surgical cases — general anaesthesia is arranged with our partner hospital. This ensures the safety of a full hospital operating theatre and a dedicated anaesthesia team.
How We Plan the Right Sedation for You
Sedation is not a one-size-fits-all decision. Before recommending any option, we go through:
- Your medical history — existing conditions, allergies, current medications, and any past reactions to anaesthesia.
- The planned procedure — its complexity, duration, and how invasive it is.
- Your anxiety level — a candid conversation about what has (or hasn’t) worked in the past.
- Your logistics — do you have someone who can bring you and take you home, especially for deeper sedation?
You’ll receive clear written instructions before the appointment: what to eat and drink beforehand, when to stop food if needed, what to wear, and what to arrange for after.
What to Expect on the Day
- Arrive early so we can go through consent and get you comfortable in the treatment room.
- Vital signs — heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation — are monitored throughout for anything beyond local anaesthesia.
- Local anaesthesia is still used at the treatment site, so the area is fully numb.
- The dentist works with a chairside assistant who helps monitor you and keeps the environment calm.
- After the procedure, you’ll rest in a recovery area until we’re satisfied you’re safe to leave.
After the Visit
Recovery depends on the sedation level used:
- Local anaesthesia only: Normal activities can be resumed immediately. Chewing may be limited for a few hours until numbness wears off.
- Nitrous oxide: Clears within 15–20 minutes. You can drive yourself home.
- Oral or IV sedation: You’ll need an adult to accompany you home. Avoid driving, operating machinery, drinking alcohol, or making important decisions for at least 24 hours. Rest and hydrate.
- General anaesthesia: You’ll be discharged from the hospital when the anaesthetist clears you — usually the same day for planned procedures. Follow the discharge instructions carefully.
You’ll leave with a written care plan and clear contact instructions if you have any concern after you get home.
The Point of Sedation Dentistry
Nobody should avoid treatment for years because the visit feels overwhelming. Sedation lets us treat what needs to be treated — a difficult extraction, a full-mouth rehabilitation, a scared child’s essential care — in a way that’s calm, comfortable, and safe.
If dental anxiety has kept you away, call the clinic and let’s talk it through. We can plan a first visit that starts with just a conversation.
